  • BUSINESS LICENCES

BOSS IT UP ACADEMY | Business Licenses:

What Is Right For Your Business?

Consult your preferred tax preparer/CPA with detailed questions. Seek out a helpful informed local CPA before diving in head first to any business.

    — Sole Proprietor: A one-owner business; common when starting a “side hustle”; recommended for those making less than $50k/yr in revenue.

    — LLC (Limited Liability Company): limited liability for the owner of the entity; a degree or veil of separation; has to file its own tax return.

    — S Corp: is a taxing status; not referred to as a business entity. The member is considered an employee or the business and must be paid a “reasonable salary.”

To help make up your mind, consider the following

    ▪ The limited liability that LLCs provide for their owners

    ▪ Sole proprietorships are generally less costly than LLCs

    ▪ LLCs need to register with the state and pay registration or filing fees

    ▪ LLCs often have annual fees you must pay to maintain registration

    ▪ LLCs are subject to state laws governing LLCs

    ▪ With an LLC, you must keep LLC records and funds separate from your own

    ▪ Operating as a sole proprietorship, you are taxed as a self-employed person

    ▪ LLCs can be taxed as sole proprietorships, partnerships, or corporations

Unlike an LLC or a C corporation, an S corporation is not a type of business entity. The S corp. designation refers to the way a business has chosen to be taxed under the Internal Revenue Code. Generally when more than one person joins a company and revenue is really going through the roof, a company may elect to be taxed as an S corp.

Personally I like LLCs, the degree of protection, but the down side is again, the fees that come along with it. For example, the yearly filing fee of $800. Additionally once you make over a certain amount in revenue (in California if you make over $250,000 in gross revenue), you are required to pay another fee (a few thousand dollars!)

I highly recommend consulting with your preferred CPA/tax lady/tax guy and choose what’s right for you. At first it won’t matter too much. You can always start as a sole proprietor and then form an LLC later on at your discretion.

When you are ready to form your corporation, I recommend using LegalZoom.com to help! They offer a bunch of upsells but just stay simple and form whatever type of corp you desire. (I recommend starting with an LLC.) Remember, a corporation is a TOOL and provides a degree of separation.

By definition - a business license is an approval or permit issued by a government agency that authorizes a business to operate within a specific jurisdiction. This license is often an additional requirement beyond the registration of a business at the state level. Whether a business is required to have a specific license depends on such factors as the nature of the business, types of products sold, and location.

Having a business license helps identify your business to potential customers as a legitimate business... With a business license you can confidently advertise yourself as a “licensed” business. Not only will this increase you confidence as a business owner, but it may potentially bring in business as your customers will feel secure in knowing you are appropriately licensed.

Mindset & Psychology Overview: I’m going to build upon all of these ideas in a little bit. They’re each really important and your overall mindset and will be a determining factor in your success. It just will. It’s like a piece of the puzzle. If there are missing pieces you’re not going to have a complete and fulfilling experience or pathway to success. I truly wish more coaches and trainings included a mindset piece because I’ve never seen it personally especially in an e-commerce course. But in any business training, I think mindset needs to be there and I can’t stress how important it is!

Positivity doesn’t always refer to simply smiling and looking cheerful, however—positivity is more about one’s overall perspective on life and their tendency to focus on all that is good in life.

In this piece, we’ll cover the basics of positivity within positive psychology, identify some of the many benefits of approaching life from a positive point of view, and explore some tips and techniques for cultivating a positive mindset.
